During the Winter Semester at Main Line Art Center, I'm offering a 4-week class, "Intro to Modern Italic Calligraphy." Whether you've never tried calligraphy or are a beginner who wants to improve, this class is for you. Explore letterforms, spacing, and the simple flourishing of a graceful Italic style that originated in Renaissance Italy. The closest hand to our own script penmanship, italic calligraphy is a beautiful way to begin your calligraphic journey.

The next 4-week class will be "Intro to Modern Gothic Calligraphy." Explore letterforms, spacing, and the simple flourishing of modernized Gothic calligraphyâ€$(Dal(Bso known as Blackletter and Old Englishâ€$(Dth(Bat originated in 12th century Europe. Gothic calligraphy is still used today on mastheads and certificates. It adds graceful elements of italic to the original squared off density of Gothic, which enhances its elegance and readability.

The final 4-week winter session will be "Intro to Celtic Calligraphy." Explore letterforms, spacing, and decorative additions to the versatile Celtic handâ€$(Dal(Bso known as Uncialâ€$(Dth(Bat was commonly used from the 4th to the 8th centuries throughout Europe. Celtic calligraphy is a script written entirely in capital letters that both lends itself to illumination and can look remarkably modern.

During the Spring Semester at Main Line Art Center, I'm offering a 6-week "Nature Journals & Garden Diaries," Thursdays, 1 - 4 PM, April 24 - May 29, 2025. Nature Journals can include personal reflection, botanical notation, metaphorical impressions, sketches, photos, maps, prints, collage, stencils, textures, and natural materials. In this class, we will celebrate Spring and create beautiful pages bound into a dos-a-dos structure. The emphasis will be experimentation with materials and techniques, cultivating a sense of wonder, and creating a thematic journal. Most of the materials will be provided for a supply fee of $15 due to the instructor at the first class.

When registration opens, there is a list of supplies that students should bring.
